Ingredients for a 9-inch round cake

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare the pan
Set the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) and let it preheat until we are done with mixing. At the same time, grease a 9-inch round pan with a little butter and sprinkle flour around the sides and bottom.

Step 2: Mixing ingredients in a bowl
Take ½ cup of unsalted butter and 1 cup of white sugar and put in a large bowl. Use an electric mixer to beat them together, until it gets light and fluffy. After that add 2 large eggs, one at a time, along with 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Beat it again for one more time and put it aside.
Step 3: Combine dry and wet mixtures
Take another empty bowl, and add 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour and 1 ¾ tablespoons of baking powder together. Pour the dry ingredients into the mixture of butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract, and mix them well with an electric mixer.
Now, add ½ cup of milk into it and stir it till the batter gets a smooth texture.
Transfer the contents of the batter into the prepared 9-inch round cake pan. Use a rubber spatula to distribute it evenly all over the surfaces.
Step 4: Put the pan into the preheated oven and bake it for 30 to 40 minutes
Put the pan in the oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes. After 30 minutes, insert a toothpick into the centre of the cake. To see if the cake is done, take the toothpick out of the cake; if it comes out clean, then it is ready to be taken out of the oven.

Step 5: Cool your cake and decorate
This is my favourite part! Take the cake out of the pan, place it on a wire cooling rack, and allow it to cool entirely for at least an hour. Once cooled, you can frost and decorate your cake as you like! I often go with a simple buttercream frosting or sometimes a light dusting of powdered sugar, which is always perfect.
